Lincoln, NE- Traffic accidents occur for countless reasons, but more and more distraction is listed as a primary cause and now accounts for a third of fatal accidents in Nebraska. It’s easy to assume that when distraction is listed as the reason for an accident that the at-fault party was using their cell phone at the time, but there are many different things that can be a distraction behind the wheel. That is the case of a recent accident in Lincoln which left five people injured.
The accident occurred Tuesday, May 19th, around 4 p.m. at a busy Lincoln intersection, and involved a total to seven vehicles, a including tractor-trailer. The Lincoln Star Journal reports that the tractor-trailer driver was driving along U.S. 77 when he rear-ended a vehicle which was pushed into another vehicle. That set off a chain of collisions and left five people with injuries.
One person was flown from the scene. Three of the victims suffered serious injury and two suffered minor injuries, but reports indicate that none of those injuries were life-threatening, according to the Star Journal.
One of the accident victims was trapped and had to be extricated from their vehicle.
Police say the tractor-trailer driver was looking at the RVs displayed on the right side of the roadway and failed to see a traffic signal had turned red until it was too late. So, clearly, cell phones are the not the only distractions motorists should be aware of and make the effort to avoid.
What motorist hasn’t looked at a sign or display on the side of the road? Businesses are banking on it, and while it’s natural to let our eyes wonder, it’s imperative that motorist to be aware of changes in traffic flow or road conditions. Failing to do so is careless and risky. Driving while distracted, regardless of what is causing the distraction, endangers others so a careless driver can expect to be responsible for any costs their victims incur.
