Albuquerque Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash
Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian on Wednesday, June 23rd, in Southeast Albuquerque.
Officers were called to the scene at Trumbull and Louisiana around 10 p.m.
“During the investigation, it was learned a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle in the intersection,” Albuquerque police said in a news release. “The vehicle left the scene of the crash, southbound on Louisiana.”
The pedestrian suffered “significant head trauma and a broken leg” and was rushed to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where, unfortunately, they died shortly after.
A witness gave officers a description of the fleeing vehicle, and the investigation is ongoing.
Hit-and-Run Accidents
Fleeing the scene of an accident is a serious crime, and, in most states, felony hit-and-run occurs when somebody escapes an accident after they harmed somebody else. The penalties if you are caught are severe and include hefty fines and jail time. If you flee after hurting somebody, you may also be sued in civil court by the injured person, which your insurance company may not cover.
If you are the injured victim of a hit-and-run, you should preserve all evidence of the accident, whatever that may be, and cooperate with the police as they investigate. If you can, you should note down any physical details of the car and the driver. Memory can become unreliable as time goes on, but writing out the information as soon as possible can significantly increase the chances of the police locating the criminal.
Legal Action After a Hit-and-Run Accident
If you are hurt in a hit-and-run accident, it can be very difficult to take legal action without the driver responsible for the crash having been caught. Even if the hit and run driver is located and identified, it may be challenging to recover damages based on their insurance and financial situation. It is usually only possible to recover damages from somebody without assets, such as real estate, money, or high-value personal property. Unfortunately, many hit-and-run drivers do not have many assets or insurance.
