Contra Costa, CA- California motorists take all sorts of risks that put lives in danger but far too many accidents are caused by impaired drivers and innocent lives are repeatedly cut short. That is the case of a recent Contra Costa accident that left three people dead and a 24-year-old facing serious criminal charges.
The accident occurred Sunday, August 16th on San Pablo Dam Road around 10 p.m. The Contra Costa Times reports that the 24-year-old driver of a 1971 Chevrolet Camaro lost control of his car and veered into oncoming traffic. After sideswiping another vehicle, the Camaro careened off the road, crashed into a tree and immediately caught on fire.
Three passengers in the Camaro, two women and one man all in their early 20s, perished in the fire.
The Camaro’s driver was ejected prior to impact and suffered only moderate injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Speaking to the Contra Costa Times, California Highway Patrol officer John Fransen said that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. Soon after the accident, the man driving the Camaro was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and manslaughter.
Impaired driving is a risk that far too many motorists take with little regard to the harm they could cause to themselves and to other motorists. In California, drunken and drugged drivers killed 802 people in 2012, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Even though intoxicated drivers generally don’t mean to harm others, they must take responsibility for their reckless actions and compensate their victims for their medical costs and suffering.
Impaired drivers don’t generally mean to harm others, but they do and should be held accountable for their actions. Victims of impaired drivers have rights, including the right to seek compensation for their injuries or the loss of a loved one.
