Atlanta, GA- A police chase ended in tragedy Sunday after a man suspected of stealing a car slammed fled police and slammed into a local family’s car killing three people inside.
According to WSB-TV, the deadly course of events began at the Atlanta Airport where a man allegedly carjacked an SUV and led police on 10-mile police chase into a College Park neighborhood. Witnesses told the TV-station the driver of the SUV sped through a stop sign and T-boned a vehicle being driven by a 75-year old woman as she headed to church with her two grandchildren. The impact of the crash killed all three occupants.
Sadly, the driver who hit then managed to get away while police helped the accident victims. WSB-TV reports the driver fled on foot.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that this was the second deadly police chase in the city over a week period. The paper says the official policy of the Atlanta Police Department is to initiate a high-speed pursuit only when the reported crime is a forcible felony, but the APD would not comment whether the chase was in line with APD policies.
WSB-TV reports that the district attorney’s office and the FBI are trying to determine if the officers involved in the chase were following department policies.
