Bob SimonNew York, NY- He survived Vietnam and imprisonment in Iraq, but the “60 Minutes” correspondent would ultimately lose his life in a traffic accident.
Simon, 73, was pronounced dead at a New York hospital after the Lincoln Town Car he was traveling in collided with another car in Manhattan Wednesday night, according to the CBS News.
Simon was a Peabody Award-winning journalist, who worked as a correspondent, for “60 Minutes” for nearly five decades and his death sent shockwaves through the new community.
“It’s a terrible loss for all of us at CBS News,” Jeff Fager, “60 Minutes” executive producer, said in a statement Wednesday night. “It is such a tragedy made worse because we lost him in a car accident, a man who has escaped more difficult situations than almost any journalist in modern times.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Lincoln Simon was traveling in struck a Mercedes sitting at a red-light at the intersection of 12th Ave. and West 30th Street. Upon impact the Lincoln slammed into a metal stanchions separating the north and south lanes.
Simon was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Simon’s cause of death was trauma to the neck and head. Investigators said Simon was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the WSJ.
The driver of the Lincoln identified as, Abdul Reshad Fedahi, was also injured, suffering two broken legs and a broken arm. The 23 year-old driver of the Mercedes was not injured.
An investigation into to the accident is still under investigation, but according the WSJ, police suspect speed played a role in the crash, based the damage to the Lincoln. They do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
