Cyclist lying on the road after an accident on a sunny dayBiloxi, MS-With summer here, the roads of Biloxi will not only be more crowded congested with but there will be more bicyclists, as well. Summer on the Gulf usually brings more tourists, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians. But with all the inviting  coastal terrain Mississippi has to offer, and two recent car-bicycle accidents, Biloxi’s biking community is concerned about their safety.
The most recent accident occurred June 7th on Pass Road and left a 39-year-old man in critical condition. The Sun Herald reports that the man, who has not been identified, was cycling along Pass Road when he was struck by a motorist.
That motorists fled the scene, but thanks to eyewitness descriptions, police were able to locate that driver and place the 38-year-old man under arrest, according to MS News Now. He has been charged with leaving the scene of accident involving injury or death which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail.
The bicyclist who was struck was in critical but stable condition Monday, the Sun Herald reported.
A couple of days before, another bicyclist who was struck by a car died of his injuries. The man was struck Thursday in George County by a 69-year-old man driving a pickup truck.
The Biloxi biking community was concerned about the two accidents. Rodney Watt, owner of Cyclist’s Choice in Gulfport, told the Sun Herald that his customers are concerned about safety. As they should be, since hundreds of bicyclists are killed, and tens of thousands are injured in car-bicycle accidents each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Legislators aimed to curtail bicycle accidents when they passed the John Paul Frerer Bicycle Safety Act in 2010. That law requires bicyclists ride on the right, and dictates that motorists must leave three feet between them and the cyclist they are passing. The law also give bicyclists the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, according the Sun Herald.
When it comes to car-bicycle accidents, it’s a mixed bag of responsibility. There are cases when bicyclists take risks that endanger their own lives, like failing to stop for a stop sign/light. But in many instances, it is the motorists who is to blame for a serious bike accident, and they must take responsibility for the harm they cause to others because of their carelessness.
