It’s not just cars, trucks, and motorcycles that you should look out for on the road, apparently. Late last year, a young woman was killed and another slightly injured in a bizarre hit-and-run accident with a stolen city-owned backhoe, reports Fox 4 in Dallas. The driver of the backhoe at the time of the incident is still at large.
The backhoe was parked at the intersection of Walnut Hill and Shady Trail in Dallas for some work by the water department. It was stolen at approximately 5 a.m. Around 5:45 a.m., it was traveling on the Stemmons Freeway in the wrong direction. It hit the victims’ car head on, killing the passenger, Lizbeth Suarez, and injuring her sister, Diana Mejicanos, who was driving. Mejicanos said that the backhoe wasn’t running with lights, so she didn’t notice it until the last second in the early morning gloom. She veered left to avoid the massive vehicle, but it struck the passenger side, killing her sister. After the car had settled, Mejicano could see that the passenger side had crumpled, and her sister was badly injured.
The driver of the backhoe jumped out of the tractor after the accident, and actually made eye contact with Mejicano. She pleaded with him to help, but instead, he ran across the median onto the other side of the highway and disappeared. Police released a sketch of the suspect at the time, but so far have been unable to make an arrest.
Suarez died from the injuries she sustained. She had just graduated from high school and had a lot to look forward to. She was planning on attending Cosmetology school. Mejicanos described her as a “great person,” and her “favorite sister.” Mejicanos claims that while her own superficial injuries caused her pain, she was in much more emotional pain than physical.
There is no word on whether the family will pursue any legal action to compensate for the loss of one daughter and the injury of another. Legally, there may be fault with the city if they were negligent in making sure their equipment could have been stolen. They may also pursue legal action against other entities for other factors relating to the case. Was there proper signage and lighting on the road at the time of the accident? Was there an issue with the steering or brakes on her car? These are questions that the family may want answered.
