Boston, MA- Travel by scooter has become common across the U.S. and is prevalent in major urban areas like Boston. Scooters, mopeds, and motorcycles are less expensive to own and maintain, but they also make riders and passengers vulnerable if involved in a traffic accident. The hazards of riding a scooter are demonstrated by a recent traffic accident that left a Boston woman dead.
According to the Boston Globe, the accident occurred on Saturday, April 30th around 11:30 a.m. The paper reports that a woman and man on a scooter were sitting at a red light, waiting to make a right turn. Behind the scooter was duck boat–an amphibious vehicle that can run on water and the road–with about 28 to 29 passengers on board waiting at the same red light. When the light changed, and traffic began to move, the duck boat plowed into the scooter.
The Globe reports that people on board the duck boat yelled at the driver, trying to warn him that he was about to strike the scooter. Unfortunately, the driver didn’t notice in time, and he hit the scooter, knocking it over and running over it. The driver stopped as soon as he realized he hit something, but it was too late for the victims.

The driver of the scooter, a 29-year-old woman, and a male passenger were both injured. The woman was rushed to the hospital, but she later succumbed to her injuries. Boston police said the man was not seriously injured.
The people on the duck boat were picked up and taken to the police station to be interviewed. The driver was also taken to a local police station for questioning.
Following the accident, the Chicago Tribune looked at the duck boat driver’s record and found that he has been cited for speeding ten times and faced several other traffic violations. The Tribune also discovered the driver was responsible for a 2003 traffic accident.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, so the driver hasn’t been charged yet, and it’s unclear if he will be cited.
