Dallas, TX- Bruce Jenner told police he was being chased by paparazzi and denied any wrong doing in the February 7th accident which left one person dead. But video taken at the time of the accident contradicts Jenner’s claims, and it is possible the reality star and former Olympian could be facing vehicular manslaughter charges.
Law enforcement agencies told the Associated Press that they obtained video which shows Jenner rear-ending two cars, the Lexus and Prius. Initial reports of the accident claimed that Jenner struck a Lexus which then struck a Prius. The video, however, shows Jenner striking both cars a law enforcement source, who asked for anonymity, told the AP, according to USA Today.
On Feb. 7th, Jenner was traveling on the Pacific Coast Highway in his Escalade, towing an off-road vehicle, when he slammed into the rear of a Lexus. The Lexus was then pushed into oncoming traffic where it was stuck by a Hummer.
The driver of the Lexus was killed.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Prius driver said through her attorney that she was struck by Jenner’s Escalade and not the Lexus.
Jenner was not injured and agreed to sobriety tests at the scene which showed he was not intoxicated at the time of the crash.
In the aftermath of the accident, Jenner released a statement via his spokesperson in which extended his sympathy to the deceased woman’s family and denied any wrongdoing in the accident.
Analysis of the video footage, which was allegedly captured by a passing bus, is still being analyzed by authorities so it’s too soon to tell if Jenner will be facing vehicular manslaughter charges. If he is charged and convicted of vehicular manslaughter, he could spend up to six years in jail.
In addition to facing criminal charges, Jenner could also face a wrongful death lawsuit if the family of the victim decides to pursue that route.
Jenner’s accident is a prime example of how difficult it can be to determine what caused an accident and who is at fault. In the case of Jenner’s accident, authorities have video that will help them determine the exact cause of the crash and who is ultimately to blame. But this isn’t the case for most accidents so victims who plan to seek compensation need an attorney well-versed in accident investigations working on their case.
