Monterey, CA- Riding a bike is great way to get in shape and commute to work, but if you live in California you are more likely to be injured or killed in a traffic accident.
In a recent study, released by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, California led the way in fatal accidents involving bicyclists. Nationally, fatal bicycle deaths are on the rise, jumping 16 percent between 2010 and 2012. That represents a far larger increase than other types of fatal collisions which only rose by 1 percent over the same period, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Bicycle crashes accounted for 2 percent of fatal accidents for the nation, but in California, fatal bicycle accidents accounted for 4 percent of traffic deaths.
Eighty-four percent of those killed in bicycle collisions in 2012 involved adults over the age of 20 with men accounting for 74 percent of all fatal bicycle accidents.
Researchers also found that in the many fatal accidents, the bicyclist was not wearing their helmet or had a blood alcohol content above .08, the Los Angeles Times reported. In 2012, a third of deceased accident victims were not wearing a helmet and 28 percent were above the legal drinking limit.
Researchers don’t know why fatal bicycle accidents increased, but there is speculation that more people are using their bikes to commute to work in urban areas where bicyclists are in the greatest danger.
