Wrong Way SignSacramento, CA- As far as car accidents go, a head-on collision, caused by wrong-way driver, has a greater chance of being fatal. Unfortunately, sometimes these accidents result in multiple deaths. Such is the case of a recent head-on collision that occurred just north of Sacramento on Interstate 80.
That accident occurred early Saturday morning as three young people were headed home to Granite Bay after a night of clubbing. According to the Sacramento Bee, the three friends were traveling in the eastbound lanes of I-80 when they were struck head-on.
Kendra Langham, 18, Mathew Beard-Witt, 18, both passengers; and driver Matthew Azar, 20, were all killed in the accident.
California Highway Patrol said the wrong-way driver, identified as Aaron Jordon Caudillo, 24, entered the interstate going the wrong way. He was driving a black SUV and didn’t have his headlights on so it would have been nearly impossible for Azar to see Caudillo’s car approaching, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Caudillo survived the impact of the crash and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
During their investigation police discovered an open bottle of rum in Caudillo’s car along with drugs. Police ordered toxicology tests and are waiting for the results before they determine which charges Caudillo will face.
A wrong-way crash, as the name implies, occurs when vehicle enters a lane and begins to travel against the flow of traffic. These kinds of crashes often occur on highways and interstates so drivers are often traveling at high rates of speed. That means the drivers of both involved vehicles rarely have the time to make evasive maneuvers.
With any type of auto accident, there are a variety of different causes, but according to the National Traffic Safety Board, the most common cause of wrong-way crashes is intoxicated driving. A past study by the California Department of Transportation found that impaired drivers were involved in 59.4 percent of overall wrong-way crashes a d 76.8 percent of fatal wrong-way crashes.
