A young child was care-flighted to a burn unit in Dallas after suffering severe burns in an accident in her kitchen, according to a report from kltv.com. According to Don Martin, the PIO for the Tyler Police Department, the child was at home in the kitchen with her mother. The oven door had been left open for a moment, and the child stepped onto it to reach the counter top. She then reached up and grabbed a pot holding boiling water and noodles, which came falling down on top of her. The mother’s back was turned as the horror unfolded. She was care-flighted to Children’s Hospital in Dallas for treatment. The police are investigating, but there’s no  indication it’s being treated as anything but an accident.
This accident highlights the need for safety in the kitchen. While the outcome of this incident was terrible, it could have been much worse. The child could have died. As it is, the child may have suffered severe enough burns to last a lifetime. Kitchen safety is incredibly important, and besides protecting kids, can also protect an adult from an accusation of being negligent if someone were to file a lawsuit when a child gets injured. Here are some tips for keeping kids safe in the kitchen.
First off, you’ll want to drill it into kids’ heads that nothing should be used in the kitchen without asking permission of the adult in charge. There are many dangerous things in the kitchen, so it’s important to show kids ahead of time what might harm them, such as a not open oven door and a pot of boiling water. Try to cover everything before you start, because you might not be able to catch something on time.
There are also safe techniques that children should learn. This includes handling hot items with an oven mitt, and using knives safely. Always leave yourself extra time when cooking with kids to make sure you won’t be rushed and gloss over teaching a valuable skill that ends up with them getting injured.
There are also general food safety rules, such as washing hands, keeping long hair tied back (a hair net’s even better!) and coughing into the crook of your elbow instead of your hand. The main rule for kids should be to listen to everything the adult says at all times. The kitchen can be exceptionally fun, but it’s not a place to play and run around.
Sometimes, though, even with all the precautions, a kid could get hurt in the kitchen. If a child’s friend has been hurt, and you’re facing accusations of negligence or worse, make sure to contact a Dallas accident attorney to defend you. If your child has been hurt, then an attorney will help you prepare a case to get any compensation that you feel you deserve. Obtaining skilled legal representation will ensure that you have someone in your corner fighting for your rights at all times.
