According to KHOU, the accident took place around 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning on MLK Jr. Boulevard near Reed Road. The station reports that a man in his 50s was crossing the street on his bicycle when he was struck by three-year veteran of HPD.
Reports indicate that the bicyclist entered an intersection with a red light and was struck. The officer who hit him said he didn’t notice the bicycle until it was too late and he was unable to stop. After striking the bicyclist, the patrol car then slammed into a chain-link fence, according to KHOU.
Witnesses at the scene confirmed that the officer’s light was green.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that bike accidents accounted for 2.2 percent of all fatal traffic accidents in 2011. The majority of those fatal accidents, 69, percent occurred in urban areas.
