Police officerColumbus, OH- An elderly Columbus man was killed last week when a police car, responding to an officer in distress call, slammed into his van.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that Officer Brian Fritz was traveling on Sullivant Ave. while responding to an emergency call when he collided with a van driven by Nyal “Bud” Brown. Officer Fritz’s emergency lights and siren were on.
Police say Brown was pulling out of a business near Anderson Blvd. when he turned into the path of Officer Fritz’s patrol car, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Brown’s van hit on the driver’s side door and it is unclear if he was wearing his seatbelt.
Brown was pronounced dead on the scene. His pet dog was also in the van but survived the collision and was rescued from the wreckage.
Officer Fritz’s patrol car erupted in flames following the collision but he was not injured.
Officer Fritz was on his way to assist another officer who was responding to a drunken driving collision. The driver in that collision fled from the scene.
Columbus Police are still investigating the collision and will determine if Officer Fritz was following department protocol when the crash occurred.
Devastating traffic crashes are all too common and the leading cause of accidental deaths in the U.S. each year. Almost all traffic accidents are caused by the negligence on the part of one or more motorists which is why personal injury laws in Ohio allow accident victims to pursue compensation from the driver or drivers who caused them pain and suffering.
Parents, spouses and children of accident victims who are killed can recover the medical and funeral expenses they incur as the result of a deadly collision. Compensation from a wrongful death suit can also cover the loss of companionship and loss of financial support a survivor experiences.
