Late Wednesday night, around 11:40 p.m., witnesses heard a car crash and called 9-1-1. Upon arrival to the scene police found a car that was nearly split in half with three deceased people near the wreckage and a fourth person hanging onto life, CBS Philadelphia reports.

A fifth victim who left the scene and turned up at a local hospital a couple of hours after the collision. Police plan to question the man and determine why he fled the scene.
Although their investigation is ongoing, police suspect that the car was driving at a “high rate of speed” on Sandmeyer Lane near Red Lion Road when the driver lost control in a curve. They believe the car then struck a curb, causing the car to go airborne and slam into a tree. The car was split down the middle giving some witnesses the impression two cars were involved in the tragic collision, according to Philly.com.
The identities of the two female and three male victims have not been released, but police say they were between the ages of 16 and 20.
Residents in the vicinity of the crash told reporters Sandemeyer Lane is often used by street racers.

It’s unfortunate, but accidents like this are not uncommon. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that between 2001 and 2008, street racing accidents killed 1,047 people.
Typically the victims of street racing accidents are the participants, but many victims are people who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
