Kansas City, MO (5-15-15)- The death toll tied to defective ignition switches in some smaller GM models has risen to 100, according to an Associated Press report.
General Motors said Monday that they had reached a “grim milestone” after the automaker’s compensation fund approved the 100th wrongful death claim resulting from faulty ignition switches in older models Chevy Cobalts and other compact car models. In those models, ignition switches slide into accessory or off mode, disabling all the safety, steering and braking systems.
Initially, GM estimated that 13 deaths resulted from the faulty ignition switches when they announced they would be recalling 2.6 million cars. The company then set up the $200 million fund to compensate the victims of the ignition switches, and in addition to the 100 death claims, the fund has received 4,432 claims. A large percentage have been deemed ineligible and 1,600 were “deficient” or lacking documentation, Fox News reports.
Thus far, according to Fox, 140 victims have accepted offers from the fund, out of the 193 that have been made.
Shortly after the controversy came to light, GM admitted that they knew about the defective switches at nearly a decade before they issued the recall. Fixing the switches would have cost the company little, 25 cents per unit, according to some estimates, but the company allowed the problem go unaddressed. That can’t be considered anything but negligent. And it’s inexcusable.
