accident-12-14Williston, ND- Oil companies pump nearly a million barrels of crude each day from North Dakota’s Bakken Oil Fields. And each one of the barrels have to be transported out which means there is more and more traffic in an area that hardly has the infrastructure to deal with it. With the oil boom comes benefits, but there are also costs one of which is an increase of traffic accidents.
Being the second largest producer of oil in the U.S. is bringing thousands of jobs to North Dakota, turning the once quiet roads into busy thoroughfares heavily traveled by commuters and commercial trucks. According to the North Dakota Department of Transportation, in 2013 an accident occurred in the state every 27 minutes with fatality happening every 2.5 days. That equates to 148 persons killed and 5,374 persons injured.
According to Al Jazeera, the busy stretch of interstate in the Bakken shale is U.S. Highway 85, which runs from Watford City to Elliston. In 2013, 20 percent of traffic fatalities for the entire state occurred on McKenzie County were Watford City is located, according to the news outlet.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Murtaza Mandviwala, a truck driver, said many drivers and companies “ignore the rules.” Traffic safety has fallen by the wayside as keeping the oil flowing has taken precedent. That is putting North Dakota on course to beat all other in states in the number of fatal commercial truck accidents that occur each year.
But traffic accidents are not the only accidents plaguing North Dakota’s oil fields, there are also a large number of workplace mishaps. The Wall Street Journal reports that from October of last year to March of this year eight people have been killed in industrial accidents, as many fatalities as the preceding 12 months. Safety officials explained to the Journal that oil companies are trying to make up for the drastic dip in oil prices so more safety errors are being made.
