Garden City, NY-  The driver accused of causing a fiery collision that killed and Long Island man and two of his children pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter charges.
On Thursday, the attorney representing 24-year-old Oniel Sharpe entered a not guilty plea for his client, telling the court that his client actually tried to help accident victims. But the prosecution says Sharpe was just trying to cover up his crime.
According to the prosecution, Sharpe was intoxicated when he left party on July 12th and driving nearly 120 mph when he lost control of his BMW and slammed into the rear of a car carrying couple and their three children, CBS New York reported.
The car immediately burst into flames, killing Ancio Ostane, his 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter. Ostane’s wife and survived the crash but watched as her husband and children burned to death.
Police say that contrary to his attorney’s claim, Sharpe did not try to render aide to the accident victims and presented video which shows Sharpe going to his car, taking something out of it and throwing it into the woods. According to police, Sharpe was throwing out a bottle of liquor that was in his vehicle.
One of Sharpe’s friends, who was in another car, helped him get away from the scene. Four hours after fleeing the police said Sharpe’s blood alcohol content was .12.
Police charged Sharpe with DWI, vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene of an accident. Last Thursday he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Police also found 23 fraudulent credit cards in Sharpe’s vehicle.
The friend, who helped Sharpe flee the scene, along with two others were arrested and charged for charges related to the crash and the fraudulent credit cards.
This accident compelled lawmakers to work on legislation that will double penalties for driver who cause hit-and-run collisions.
