Accident reportNew York, NY- New Yorkers are busy on-the-go people who likely lose sleep from time to time. It’s normal to sacrifice sleep but sometimes that sacrifice can be bigger than we anticipate considering that drowsy driving is a growing safety concern.
Last fall, the American Automobile Association (AAA) conducted a study that looked at the role drowsy driving plays in fatal accidents nationwide. They association analyzed a sampling of 14,000 traffic accidents that occurred between 2009 and 2013 and found that 21 percent of fatal collisions were caused by drowsy drivers that equates to over 1 in 5 fatal accidents. Thirteen percent of accidents caused by drowsy drivers resulted in injuries.
The AAA figures however contrast with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which states that only 1 to 3 percent of fatal traffic accidents can be attributed to drowsy driving. But the AAA says that federal estimates drastically under estimate the actual role drowsy driving plays in fatal crashes and survey from the National Sleep Foundation which found that 60 percent of survey participants admitted to driving drowsy at least once in the past year.
Regardless of whose data you think is more accurate, drowsy driving is dangerous and leads to thousands of unnecessary deaths and injuries each year in the U.S. And the real point of such studies is to bring awareness to the dangers of drowsy driving.
Drowsy driving can make it difficult for a person to the focus on their driving and causes drivers to drift in their lanes and miss traffic signals, to name a few. If you are driving and you find yourself nodding off behind the wheel, you are urged to pull over somewhere safe as soon as possible. Take a cat nap or walk around, whatever you do: Get off the road! It could save your life or someone else’s.
Most drivers in New York never have any intention of falling asleep at the wheel and causing an accident, but if they ignore the signs of fatigue, they could be responsible for harming and killing another person. When a driver causes an accident, they can be and should be held accountable for the accident-related costs their victims incur.
A major traffic accident can change a person’s life for the worse and leave them with costly bills they shouldn’t have to cover out of their own pockets. If you have been injured in an accident or lost a loved one, USAttorneys recommends you speak with an accident lawyer in New York who will evaluate your case and determine if you are eligible for compensation.
