Gastonia, NC- Traffic accidents had been on the decline, but analysis of 2015 accident rates throughout the U.S. found the trend has reversed. Nationwide, traffic accidents increased by 7.2 percent last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which represents the biggest increase in nearly five decades.

The Tar Heel state saw a 7.4 percent increase in fatalities over last year, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,378. Alcohol-related fatalities in the state rose 13.2 percent over 2014, the Charlotte Observer reports.
Nationwide, half of all of those killed in traffic accidents were not wearing their seat belts. Pedestrian and bicyclist deaths also rose significantly, according to the Charlotte Observer.
The NHTSA also found that the number of miles traveled increased by 3.5 percent which they attribute to lower gas prices and job growth. The agency also noted that motorists continue to engage in dangerous driving habits such as drunken driving or driving while distracted.
