Amador County, CA- It’s an oft repeated and well-known fact that alcohol and/or drugs play a role in about one-third of all fatal traffic accidents. Such is the case of a recent California accident which left one person dead a two others seriously injured.
The accident occurred on Friday, Jan. 23 in San Leandro on I-580 at approximately 4:30 a.m. Police say the driver of a Kia, a 32 year-old man from Fremont, lost control of his vehicle in the eastbound lanes and veered into the center median where he struck a guardrail, the Contra Costa Times reported. After striking the guardrail, the Kia overturned several times, ejecting the driver and his passenger, a 25 year-old woman.
The woman was pronounced dead on the scene, and the man was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Another motorist, driving a Honda and traveling in westbound lanes struck the Kia and soon burst into flames. That motorist was able get out of the car before being badly burned and suffered only minor injuries, the Contra Costa Times.
A man who stopped to help the man in the Honda also suffered minor injuries.
The interstate was closed for a few hours while crews worked to clean up the scene.
Police suspect drugs were played a role in the first accident involving the Kia, but said they do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved in the second accident.
