CollisionPontiac, MI- After a decade-long downward trend, fatal traffic accidents in Michigan are on the rise, increasing nearly ten percent in 2015.
The Traffic Improvement Association of Michigan reports that the 972 deaths that occurred in the state in 2015 represented a 9.7 percent increase in traffic deaths. That is a steep rise when you consider traffic deaths had been on the decline over the past decade.
Although Jaimie Dolan of the Michigan Traffic Safety Network told the Petoskey News that his agency cannot point to one reason traffic deaths increased, saying there are several factors at play.
One of those factors is a decrease in seat belt use. According to state data, seat belt use declined from 98 percent in 2009 to 93 percent in 2014. Speed and inclement weather also contributed to fatal crashes as did driving while intoxicated.
Some motorists drive as though they are the only ones on the road and give little thought to how their actions will affect other motorists. That is why there were 298,699 traffic accidents in Michigan in 2014 according to data from Office of Highway Safety Planning. That equates to one traffic crash every 1 minute and 46 minutes. All of those traffic crashes resulted in over 71,000 injuries and cost the state of Michigan over $8 billion.
Some traffic accident victims in Michigan are blessed and get to walk away from a traffic crash with minimal or no injuries. But too many traffic accident victims are not that fortunate, and they end up suffering catastrophic and costly injuries. Victims of car or truck accidents deserve to be compensated for the injuries and pain they suffered at the hands of a careless or negligent motorist.
