Traffic fatalities increased by 9 percent in first six months of 2016.

Murfreesboro, TN- Fatal traffic accidents have been on the decline over the past few decades, but new data from the National Safety Council shows that fatal accidents are on the rise again. So, what is causing the increase in traffic deaths?
After analyzing accident statistics for the first six months of 2016, the National Safety Council found that fatal accidents rose by 9 percent compared to fatality rates for the first six months of 2015, according to a press release. When compared to the first half of 2014, the NSC found an 18 percent increase in traffic deaths in 2016. Overall, 19,000 people have been killed in traffic crashes for the first half of 2016.
“Our complacency is killing us,” Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council told the Washington Post. “One hundred deaths every day should outrage us. Americans should demand change to prioritize safety actions and protect ourselves from one of the leading causes of preventable death.”
Cell phones, lower gas prices, speed and lower unemployment are behind the rise of fatal accidents in number of accidents in 2016.

Hersman told the Post that by year’s end, there could be more than 40,000 fatal crashes which would surpass 2007 when traffic accidents reached a peak. She believes that the upcoming Labor Day weekend will add to the fatality rate.
So, what is leading to this increase?
There is not one thing leading to the increase fatal accidents but a combination of factors. A couple of reasons for the increase is cheaper gas and lower unemployment rates, according to NSC. Hersman also told the Washington Post that higher speed limits and texting and driving are also behind the dramatic increase.
There are steps all motorists can take to prevent a deadly accident, but those measures can only make a person safe if other drivers take the task of driving seriously. Sadly, many motorists ignore best driving practices, and people die as a consequence.
