A tragic accident claimed the life of a worker at a BIC Corp.’s distribution center located in Charlotte, NC back in May. The Charlotte Observer reported that the incident happened a little before 9:00 a.m. and involved a forklift. Medics and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were called to the scene of the accident and shortly after their arrival, they pronounced the individual dead on site.
Police along with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are conducting an investigation into the matter to determine what happened. Police have not disclosed the identity of the worker who was killed, however, BIC Corp. officials did put out a statement saying they were “devastated to learn of the employee’s death” and referred to the incident as a “tragic accident.”
BIC Group spokesman Robert Miller added, “Our thoughts are with the individual’s family and friends.” Miller also said, “We are fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation and [are] not sharing any other details about the situation at this time.”
OSHA Records 24 Deaths from Forklift Accident in 2019
In 2019, 24 deaths associated with a forklift accident were reported to OSHA. On August 5, 2019, an employee was struck and killed by a forklift that was being driven by a coworker. The worker was in the process of greasing the bearings in the front of a chain conveyor when his coworker began operating a forklift that was loaded with two stacked fruit bins. OSHA says the operator intended to unload the fruit bins on top of the conveyor, however, because the load restricted his visibility, he didn’t see the other worker greasing the bearings and struck him.
Then, on September 6, 2019, an employee died after the forklift he was driving tipped over onto its side. That employee was in the process of moving a 3,200 lb. bag of cement and while backing up, the forklift shifted to the left and tipped over. The employee was then struck by a metal guardrail and suffered fatal injuries.
