Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Resident Suffers Fatal Injuries After Diving into Water at Crab Island

An unfortunate accident was reported just a few days ago that involved a Fort Walton Beach, FL resident. According to sources, 40-year-old Craig Hanrahan dove off a center console boat into the water at Crab Island and shortly after, was found floating face down. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says the man was pulled from the water, which is usually around two to three feet deep, and was loaded onto a pontoon boat by emergency responders. Hanrahan was then rushed to a nearby Coast Guard Station.

Sadly, the 40-year-old was later pronounced dead.

Northwest Florida Daily News says Hanrahan’s death is the third to occur in the East Pass/Crab Island area this year. In June, a 29-year-old male from Mississippi drowned while snorkeling near a jetty. During that same week, another male died after he jumped into the water at Crab Island and was pulled into an outgoing current. The source says that a 44-year-old male from Georgia also died in June after suffering serious injuries in an accident.

Crab Island is a sandbar that is located in Destin, Florida, a city just minutes away from Fort Walton Beach, FL. Over the years, the area has gained popularity for the various activities the site offers. Although lawmakers in Florida are encouraging residents to avoid places that tend to attract large crowds to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus, many individuals are ignoring the warnings and are still visiting beaches and other outdoor areas as many remained closed for months due to the pandemic. It appears the more people who visit these overly populated places, the more incidents that are reported.
