Traffic Accident InjuryStaten Island, NY- One of the best features of a good set of headphones is their ability to block out external noises. That may be great when the you’re trying to escape a blaring television, shouting children or the leaf blower next door, but if you are a pedestrian, those headphones could lead to injury or your untimely demise.
Just by stepping out to go for a walk you are 1.5 times more likely to be killed in a traffic accident and there are things you can do that will increase those odds even more. Walking while distracted is a major danger for pedestrians and so is wearing a set of headphones.
In a study from 2012, researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine examined accident data of pedestrian accidents that resulted in injuries or deaths. Researchers specifically looked for incidents that involved pedestrians wearing headphones. They reviewed all available databases between 2004 and 2011 and found that deaths of pedestrians wearing headphones tripled, according to Live Science.
“Everybody is aware of the risk of cell phones and texting in automobiles, but I see more and more teens distracted with the latest devices and headphones in their ears,” lead study author Dr. Richard Lichenstein said, according to Live Science. He added, “Unfortunately as we make more and more enticing devices, the risk of injury from distraction and blocking out other sounds increases.”
Ninety percent of those fatal pedestrian accidents occurred in urban settings areas like Staten Island and men were two-thirds more likely to be a victim. Nearly 70 percent of pedestrian accidents involving headphones resulted in the death of the pedestrian. And, what’s more, 55 percent of those accidents involved trains.
Researchers said there was a connection between innovations in auditory devices, including headphones, and an increase in pedestrian deaths. That is because headphones eliminate the sounds of traffic, so pedestrians are unaware of the presence of motor vehicles.
