Columbia, SC- A fiery traffic collision on 1-26 just north Columbia which involved a tanker truck and several passenger vehicles left several people injured early last Wednesday.
The accident occurred May 27, just before 6 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-26. Police aren’t sure what set off the fiery collision, but they do know it involved 10 vehicles, including a tractor-trailer and a tanker truck which was carrying 8,500 gallons of diesel fuel.
Speaking to WYFF 4, one of the victims said that he came upon a three-car accident and was trying to get around the collision when he was struck from behind. His car caught on fire and he managed to scramble out of his wrecked vehicle before it was overtaken by flames.
He was among the several people injured in the crash and suffered second degree burns on his arms and legs. Surprisingly, no one was killed in the crash, but there were at least four victims who had to be taken to the hospital, according to WYFF.
The blaze caused by the crash caused significant damage to the roadway and threatened to spread to a nearby residential neighborhood. At least a few of the autos and the tanker truck were torched in the blaze.
Because of the accident, the eastbound and westbound lanes of 1-26 were closed for several hours as the accident scene was cleared.
Police are still trying to determine the cause of the accident so no one has been cited for the collision yet, but that could change once the investigation is concluded.
