Highway Patrol Police Car Next to Alcoholic Drink and Keys Under Spot Light.Philadelphia, PA- Every time a police officer pulls over a motorists on a busy highway, they put their lives at risk. One Pennsylvania police officer had luck on his side late Sunday night when a routine traffic stop turned into an accident scene with injuries.
CBS Philadelphia reports that a Falls Township officer pulled over a motorist who was traveling 90 mph on Route 1 around 11 p.m. Sunday night. As the officer was walking towards a Dodge Charger, another motorist, driving a Toyota, came along and struck his patrol car setting of a chain-reaction collision.
The patrol car then slammed into the rear of the Charger, and all three cars were pushed about 20 feet, according to ABC. All three vehicles incurred extensive damage. Police officer Tom Lundgren and four occupants for the charger were injured and taken to local hospitals for treatment. NBC reported that none of those injuries were life-threatening.
Although many intoxicated drivers manage to escape the accidents they create with minor injury, in this particular accident, the at-fault driver suffered the worst injuries. CBS Philadelphia reports that the driver of the Toyota struck his head and suffered severe trauma to his head and face. He was listed in serious condition.
He has been identified as a 29-year-old man from Trenton, New Jersey. Police told CBS that the driver he was possibly intoxicated and they are treating the incident as a DUI accident. His blood has been drawn and depending in the results this driver could be facing charges.
NBC reported that the Falls Township officer usually works with a K-9, but he left the dog at home. Good thing he did since the dog would have likely been killed in the crash.
