Cincinnati, OH- Investigators in Cincinnati are trying to determine why a bridge spanning I-75 collapsed, leaving one construction worker dead.
On Monday night around 10:30 p.m. Kentucky native Brandon Carl was working on the overpass at Hopple Street in Cincinnati. Carl was preparing the bridge from demolition and tractor-trailer was about to pass under the bridge when it all of the sudden collapses. The falling debris trapped Carl underneath, but narrowly missed the tractor-trailer.
Carl was crushed by the rubble, and was pronounced dead on the scene. It took crews a few hours to free him.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was fortunate and only suffered minor injuries. The debris crushed the engine of his tractor, but barely missed the cab.
Now the police and investigators are trying to figure out what caused the bridge to collapse in the first place. Authorities from Occupational Safety and Health Administration along with the Cincinnati Police Department will be investigating the accident.
Kokosing Construction Company Inc. was contracted to do construction on the Hopple Street interchange portion of I-75, and according to the Ohio Department of Transportation, the company has an “excellent” safety record.
Speaking with the Enquirer, engineer Linwood Howell, who routinely inspects bridges for the state of Texas said the collapse could have been caused the order in which the bridge was deconstructed. Howell said contractors must pay fine for shutting down any lanes on the interstate so to save time they began working on the sides in an effort to save time. Howell told the Enquirer that removing the sides first weakened the bridge.
The ODOT however said the order at which Kokosing was conducting the demolition was the correct order in which that type of work should be done.
Of course, it is too early to tell if Howell’s assertions are correct since the investigation is still underway.
By nature, accidents are unintentional acts that impact others. People don’t drive with the intention of harming other motorists and employers never intend for their employees to be injured or killed.  But if negligence somehow played a role in someone’s unfortunate injuries or untimely death.
Victims of a road or workplace accident understandably want the parties responsible for their injuries or death of a loved one to be held accountable. They want compensation for bills they are facing and they want a settlement that recognizes the pain and anguish an accident has caused them. A knowledgeable accident attorney will work relentlessly to ensure the victims they represent receive a fair and generous settlement.
Often times, fatal accidents, whether on the road or at work, take the lives of people who are helping support their family. For many American families, the loss of one person’s income can put them on the road to financial ruin. Their financial losses are compounded by the medical and funeral expenses they now have to shoulder because of their loved one’s accident.
If you have lost a loved one or have been injured in a traffic or workplace accident, you should speak with an attorney at once. You need someone in your side who understands the law and the value of your injuries.
