Jackson, Mississippi, Woman Streams Her Last Moments Alive on Facebook Before Being Struck by a Vehicle on I-55

As 26-year-old Ashlee Sims from Jackson was driving down I-55 near Briarwood, her phone appears to be recording and streaming her enjoying a night out [Source: WLBT]. In the video that was live streaming to Facebook, Sims is seen smiling and singing up until the point where her phone flew out of the window and into the road where oncoming traffic was traveling. Although the phone continues to record once out the window, the only thing that can be heard are cars driving by.

Jackson police say that after the phone left the vehicle, Sims pulled over and got out to look for it. That is when she was struck and killed by a passing car. After the video footage was shared with accident reconstructionist Tim Corbitt, he explained based on the evidence what he thinks happened. Corbitt said that it was evident the phone fell in a live traffic lane as “you can hear the phone get hit by a couple of cars.” He told the source that Sims likely went or attempted to go to the live traffic lane to retrieve her phone which is “extremely dangerous.”

Corbitt also said that the stretch of interstate where Sims died is very dark at night and it is unlikely that any motorist would have been able to see her. The accident expert also added that a motorist’s reaction time to a person or thing in the road is less than five seconds, which is not enough time to stop to avoid a collision. That timing does not take into account distractions or lighting, or the time of day.

While sources have only provided few details into the accident, the Daily Mail says that Sims does leave behind two children.
