Olathe, KS- A Kansas Sheriff’s Deputy is was fortunate to walk away from a head-on collision in Towanda Saturday evening.
According to KSN-TV the accident took place Saturday evening around 5:45 p.m. in Butler County along a stretch of K-254. The Sheriff’s Deputy was parked in the center median, attempting to make a left turn after responding to a prior accident.
Police say a pickup being driven by a 72-year-old Jan Adair, of Wichita, left its lane of travel and slammed into the patrol car. KSN-TV reports that passenger side of the patrol car got the worst of the impact.
Deputy Benjamin L. Griffin, 31, suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital shortly after the accident.
Adair and his passenger, 46-year-old Manuel Juan Caldera, were also injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries is not known.
Why the driver veered into oncoming traffic is not known at this time. Head-on collisions account for a small percentage of accidents but account for 10 percent of traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
