Lincoln, NE- A deadly traffic accident is a dreadful thing for a family to have to endure, but an accident is even more agonizing when an untimely death is caused by a person driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Impaired drivers rarely think about how much they could hurt someone else, but they often pay the price for their actions down the road.
The Lincoln Star Journal reports local man pleaded guilty to a drunken driving accident that left a 57-year-old bicyclist dead. If convicted, 27-year-old Everett Hoesing faces up to 20 years in jail.
According to reports Hoesing was heavily intoxicated last September when he struck Dr. Douglas Dalke as he rode his bike on Saltillo Road. Hoesing was traveling nearly 60 mph when he struck Dalke who was pronounced dead on the scene.
Hoesing later told police he didn’t see Dakle and couldn’t stop before hitting him. At the scene of the accident, police noticed his breath smelled of alcohol and took him the drunk tank. Two hours after being put in a tank Hoesing registered a .189 on breathalyzer test, twice Nebraska’s legal limit, the Star Journal reports.
On Wednesday, Hoesing entered a guilty plea and will appear on court in July 16th to be sentenced.
Drunken or drugged accidents have been steadily declining over the past three decades, but these types of accidents still account for a third of fatal accidents in Nebraska and thousands of injuries. What makes impaired driving accidents so sad is that most intoxicated drivers know they shouldn’t get behind the wheel, they are just too arrogant to think they are bound to become a statistic.
These drivers cause unnecessary pain and grief for too many families and they understandably want justice for their pain and agony.
