car accidentFulton County, GA- One of the founding members of legendary Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd was killed over the weekend in a single vehicle accident.
The Cartersville Patch reports that Robert “Bob” Burns, 64, former drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, was killed Friday night just before midnight after he struck a tree. According to reports, Burns lost control in curve in the roadway and went off the road.
Georgia State Patrol spokesperson, Tracey Watson told the Patch, “After leaving the roadway, the driver struck a mailbox and a tree with the front of the vehicle.” Watson added that it was raining heavily when the accident occurred.
Burns survived the initial impact and was alive when emergency crews arrived but died shortly after.
Police do not suspect drugs of alcohol played a role in the accident, but noted Burns was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
Burns played on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s iconic songs “Freebird,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” He left the band in 1977 after three members were killed in a plane crash.
Another accident, occurring on 1-85 in Commerce left three members of a heavy metal band dead early Monday morning.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a black passenger van carrying 12 members of two bands Wormriech and Kult of Azrael crashed into a tree.
Police told 11 Alive News that the driver of the van lost control, left the roadway, rolled down an embankment and crashed into a tree. Three men were ejected from the van and were killed instantly. Eight other passengers were seriously injured and taken to area hospitals where two of the injured remain in critical condition.
The band was traveling from Spartanburg to Atlanta where the groups had  shows lined up for Monday night.
11 Alive reports that the accident is still under investigation, but police said charges against the driver are pending.
