Fresno County, CA- A traffic accident in Fresno County just northwest of Reedley left four men dead and now the driver of the van is facing vehicular manslaughter charges.
The Fresno Bee reports that nine men were leaving their jobs at a nearby orange grove Friday night around 6 p.m. when the accident occurred at the intersection of American and Navelencia Avenues. California Highway Patrol said the driver of the van attempted to pass a tractor-trailer when the truck driver began to make a left turn on Navelencia Ave. The truck, which had the right of way, clipped the van’s front end, causing the van to roll over several times.
At least four men in the van who were not wearing their seat belts and were ejected from the van, according to the Fresno Bee. The men who were killed have been identified as; Fortino Vasquez Tepeco, 29, Pedro Rodriguez Vasquez, 21, Aguileo Vasquez Vargas, 56, and Jorge Aguilera, 55.
The other five occupants, including the driver, were wearing their seat belts and suffered only minor injuries.
CHP said the driver of the van should have never been trying to pass the tractor-trailer. That, in addition to the fact that there were nine passengers in the minivan which only has seat belts for eight, led police to charge the van driver with four counts of vehicular manslaughter.
