Miami, FL – On Tuesday August 8th, just before 6:30 a.m., a Miami security guard was killed in a freak accident while on the job.
CBS Miami reports that a longtime employee for the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition was found dead by his co-worker a little before 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The victim, in his early 70s, was trying to close the gate at the fair site near SW 109th Avenue and Coral Way. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when the gate fell on him and killed him.
The Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition released a statement Tuesday afternoon saying they are “saddened by the death of our longtime employee from an apparent workplace accident.”
While Miami-Dade Police believe the accident occurred after the security guard opened a gate in order to let a vehicle leave the fairgrounds. They confirm that the company is cooperating with local authorities who are investigating the deadly accident.
The victim will certainly be missed; According to 7 News Miami, witnesses shared how his co-workers were visibly upset and distraught over the fatal accident. A co-worker at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition, Nelly Martinez, said “He tells me, ‘Please pray for me pray for me.’ All the time crying.”

The death of the security guard makes this the second fatal workplace accident on the fairgrounds within the past two years. 7 News Miami further reports that a contractor was killed while doing maintenance on a ride in 2016.
