Montana Driver Responsible for Causing Fatal Drunk Driving Accident Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison

Leo James Hagan, 20, is facing an 18-month prison sentence after he caused a fatal drunk driving accident in Great Falls, Montana that claimed the life of 41-year-old Paul Cadotte [Source: Montana Standard]. It was back in June 2019 when Hagan, Codette, and another individual went out drinking at an East Glacier bar. After leaving the bar, Hagan got behind the wheel of his vehicle intoxicated and later lost control of it.

Officials say the vehicle rolled, ejected Cadotte and the other passenger, and then struck a tree. While Cadotte was pronounced dead at the scene, the other passenger managed to survive, but suffered serious injuries. Nearly four hours after the fatal accident, Hagan’s blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.09% which is above the state’s legal limit for driving. After the accident, Hagan was charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Hagan is Sentenced for the Crimes He Committed

It wasn’t until recently that Hagan was sentenced. Rather than being hit with an 18-year prison sentence, which is the maximum penalty that could have been imposed for the manslaughter and assault conviction together, U.S. District Court Judge Brian Morris sentenced him to 18 months in federal prison. Morris also sentenced Hagan to three years of supervised release.

During this time, Hagan will not be permitted to drive a vehicle without first obtaining permission from his probation officer and he must also “make a good faith effort to obtain his GED within the first year,” reports the Montana Standard. During the hearing, Hagan told Cadotte’s family, “I am deeply sorry taking Paul away from you. Apologies serve no justice here.”
