a1Lincoln, NE- With the Sturgis Bike Rally approaching, lawmakers in Nebraska are considering a repeal of the state’s motorcycle helmet law because they believe it deprives the state of millions of tourist dollars.
Senator David Bloomfield has once again introduced legislation that would motorcyclist the choice of whether they want to wear a helmet or not, regardless of their age.
“(We should) reopen our borders to hundreds of thousands of people for one primary reason: Choose to avoid our beautiful state and take their millions of dollars elsewhere,” Sen. Dave Bloomfield said, according to KETV.
LB 31 faced heavy debate in committee, including testimony from motorcycle accident victims who testified that wearing a helmet saved their life. But proponents of the law want bikers to choose for themselves.
Bloomfield says that bikers who are headed to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota avoid the state because of the helmet law, causing the state to lose Opponents to the law however state that the cost of the motorcycle accidents would negate the revenue generated by a repeal of the law.
If the law does make it out of committee, Nebraska would be one of only four states without helmet laws.
