Lincoln, NE- A hit-and-run accident on Sunday left a 50-year-old woman dead and now the driver who struck her is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene of an accident.
The accident occurred Sunday in 1-80 in Grand Island when a vehicle crossed the center median and slammed into a truck driven by the deceased woman.
Prior to the collision, police received calls about a black Chrysler speeding and driving erratically in the westbound lanes of I-80. Witnesses say the driver was speeding when they lost control and careened into the center median then into the eastbound lanes where the vehicle struck a SUV.
The SUV then rolled and ejected the driver. The driver, a 50-year-old woman, was pronounced dead in the scene. She was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, according to NebraskaTV.com.
Police were able to apprehend the driver a little way down the highway and placed her under arrest. The 29-year-old woman driving the Chrysler was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of accident.
Reports don’t indicate if the woman responsible for the hit-and-run was under the influence of drugs or alcohol so we don’t know if that played a role in this collision.
