Staten Island, NY- A driver heading the wrong-way day Sprain Brook Parkway early Friday morning violently struck an off-duty NYPD officer, killing him instantly and tying traffic for hours.
NYPD Officer Paul Duncan, 46, a married father of one, headed to work in Queens around 4:00 a.m. when the accident occurred. His widow Rechelle Duncan told the New York Post that her husband normally worked a later shift, but that morning he had to be in much earlier.
According to reports, Duncan was traveling south on the parkway when he was struck head-on by 20 year-old Efren Moreno. The impact of the crash was so great that it sent Duncan’s vehicle over a guardrail and into a snowbank, trapping Duncan inside. The highly-respected officer was pronounced dead on the scene.
Moreno was also injured and was taken to a local hospital where he was put into a medically induced coma, according to the New York Post. Police said both Duncan and Moreno were traveling around 55 to 60 mph when the crash occurred and because it happened in a curve Duncan was unable to avoid being struck. Police received several calls about the wrong-way driver and were searching for the vehicle when the accident occurred.
In a search of Moreno’s car, police found a bag of marijuana and said it reeked of booze. Police took a sample of his blood to test for intoxication.
Rechelle Duncan said she and her met in high school and had been together for the past 30 years, according to NY Post. She says she will focus on raising her 13 year-old daughter.
This accident has devastated a family, robbing them a person they love and depend on. And, sadly, this happens to hundreds of New York families every year. These families have to face the unimaginable pain of having unnecessarily ripped from their lives. Those who have lost a loved one to a reckless driver have rights and with a New York accident attorney on their side can seek compensation for their emotional and financial losses.
Wrong-way crashes can occur anywhere, but there are far more dangerous on interstates and highways were motorists reach high speeds, giving both motorists little time to make evasive maneuvers. While wrong-way crashes have a number of causes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the primary cause is intoxicated driving.
No price can be put on the loss of a parent, child, spouse or sibling and no amount of compensation can blunt the pain of losing someone you care dearly about. It’s natural for a family to want to make a reckless driver pay for their actions. Our accident attorneys in Staten Island know how to build a strong personal injury or wrongful death claim and strive to ensure the clients they represent get the justice they deserve. They know a settlement is no substitute for the person you lost, but it can help relieve some of your financial burdens so you can focus on getting past your pain.
