Jefferson, OH- “Days of Our Lives” star Freddie Smith is facing a felony and misdemeanor after causing a drunken driving accident last month which left his girlfriend suffering serious injury.
Police say that on Smith, 26, was drunk when he lost control of his car in a curve and crashed in Ashtabula County, ABC News reported. Smith’s vehicle plunged into a culvert and overturned, trapping his girlfriend, actress Alyssa Tabit, inside.
Tabit suffered serious injuries but is currently recovering.
Smith suffered only minor injuries.
Police said Smith’s blood alcohol level was .93, above the state’s legal limit of .08. Smith has been charged with felony vehicular assault and misdemeanor driving under the influence.
Drunken driving causes nearly a third of all fatal traffic accidents in the U.S., but that fact doesn’t deter many drivers from engaging in this dangerous behavior. So many people get behind the wheel when they’ve had too much to drink with little regard to the harm they could cause to others. Even when an accident victim survives, they often suffer major injuries. When victims of intoxicated drivers need help, they can turn to an Ohio accident attorney.
In another accident that grabbed headlines, two South Pointe, Ohio teens died after and Sunday collision and two others suffered serious injury.
That accident took place just after 1 p.m. when 17 year-old Jacob Damron ran a stop sign of Lick Creek Road and U.S. 52, WCHS reported.
As Damron pulled onto U.S. 52, his vehicle was broadsided by oncoming vehicle carrying two passengers.
Damron was killed instantly. His passenger and girlfriend, Sara Thoman, was critically injured and taken to a local hospital. Damron was pronounced dead on Sunday shortly after the crash. Thoman was in critical condition until Monday when she succumbed to her injuries.
Two occupants of the car that struck Damron’s vehicle were taken to a local hospital where they were listed in serious condition.
This is a tragedy that could have been avoided, but the reality is that drivers make life-altering mistakes every day. Whether it is just inexperience, which is often the case with teen drivers, or the at-fault party was acting recklessly, they must be held accountable for causing harm to another person or persons.
We all understand that the majority of people who cause a traffic accident never intend to hurt others, much less kill someone, but that doesn’t change the fact that they must take responsibility for the consequences of their actions,
Accident victims expect that the person responsible for their injuries to cover their medical and other accident-related expenses. Pursing a personal injury or wrongful death claim is not easy, and ensuring you get a fair settlement depends on the strength of your case. When an accident victim retains an Ohio accident attorney, they will have someone on their side who understands the costs they are facing and is dedicated to assuring their claim is successful.
