December is definitely a month to remember. Christmas and New Years are primarily what everyone looked forward to in this month, however, there were some unfortunate occurrences that took place in the state of Ohio. December marked the month where a driver was placed before a judge for the killing of a former Cleveland police officer according to Cleveland.com.
The accident itself transpired back in August when Porsha Harris, 27, was traveling eastbound on Superior Avenue along with former officer Shanni Dizard. As the two made their way down the road, Harris attempted to change lanes to get around another vehicle. When doing so, Harris crashed into the back of Dizard’s motorcycle. The impact caused Dizard’s bike to go down, skidding across the road. She then slammed into a steel pole. Harris attempted to flee the scene of the collision. This was a case of a hit-and-run accident.
Although hit-and-run accidents make it more difficult to identify who caused the crash, individuals involved in similar incidents should file an accident claim followed by contacting a local Cleveland accident attorney. Not only may you be entitled to receive compensation for the damages and injuries, but criminal charges may be enforced in the event the driver is identified.
In this particular accident, a witness who was present for the crash followed Harris and provided police officials with her license plate number. Harris was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to stop after an accident. She recently plead no-contest in court and will be sentenced January 18, 2017.
When a defendant pleads no-contest, they are essentially claiming they are not accepting the charges nor are they disputing the charges. It can be expected that Harris’ criminal defense attorney will be present for the sentencing in the coming weeks.
