New Orleans, LA- New Orleans is a buzzing city with lots of traffic of all varieties—car, foot, and bike, but this convergence can be treacherous, even lethal. This is demonstrated by a recent accident on Elysian Fields which left one cyclist dead.
New Orleans Police say the accident occurred Monday, July 6th just around 10:30 p.m. when a bicyclist headed towards the lake was struck by a car. Lt. Anthony Michieu of the NOPD Traffic Division explained to WWL-TV that the bicyclist was “catapulted” onto the side of the road where he shortly died.
The driver then fled the scene and has yet to be located.  Police are looking for a black or gray Pontiac Vibe which will have significant damage to the front end, WDSU-TV reported. There is reward for anyone who can help police identify the driver.
The news of another bicyclist’s death spread quickly through the city’s cycling community. Last year, Vox named New Orleans as one of the five deadliest U.S. cities for bicyclists. The reported noted that in the Big Easy there were 5.54 bicyclists death per every 1 million residents.
With bicycle accidents, there are many incidents in which a bicyclist is responsible; perhaps they failed to stop at stop sign or traffic signal or was riding at night with no lights.
