a2Philadelphia, PA-When motorists travel through a work zone on an interstate, they are warned to slow down, but too many disregard those warnings, putting themselves, motorists and workers in jeopardy. Such is the case of a weekend accident in Pennsylvania that left a motorist dead and injured three construction workers, one seriously.
Philly.com reports that just before 6 a.m. Saturday, a motorist, who has not been identified, was traveling in the eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the Bensalem- area when they entered a work zone and struck a truck, carrying three  workers. The three men were picking up cones to reopen the lane.
The driver was pronounced dead on the scene. One of the workers was seriously injured and was flown to a local hospital. The other two suffered minor injuries, according to Philly.com.
Because of the accident, the eastbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed for several hours.
In a statement to Philly.com, Turnpike Commission Chairman Sean Logan said, “Though the cause of this morning’s disaster hasn’t yet been confirmed, experience tells us that speed and distraction are likely to blame.”
A similar accident occurred Monday on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bedford County. According to the Philly.com, a speeding motorist trying to evade police swerved into a work zone where they struck and injured a worker.
In light of those two accidents, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation issued a message, warning motorists: Slow down and pay attention!! The agency is also cracking on speeders by placing officers in construction zones throughout the state.
Both of these accidents highlight the two driving habits that endanger other motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and in these two incidents roadway workers. Speed and distraction are two primary causes of car accidents nationwide and although this is something motorists realize, they still allow themselves to engage in these potentially deadly behavior.
