Several People Injured after Truck Causes 23-car Pile-up in Seattle

Seattle, WA- A police investigation turned into a massive traffic pile-up that left several people injured and tied up I-5 for hours.
The accident occurred Saturday, July 18th just after 8 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 while police were on the scene of a fatal shooting. Traffic had come to a halt as a result of the police investigation when a double-dump truck traveling in the opposite direction lost control.
The Seattle Times reports that a southbound traveling dump truck, carrying gravel and dirt, crashed through cables and crossed the center median before plowing head-on into the line of traffic stopped in the northbound lanes. A total of 23 cars were involved in the collision and several people suffered critical injuries.
Some of the victims in this crash did suffer critical injuries, but they are all fortunate this accident didn’t end up being deadly. Police are still trying to determine the cause of the crash, but suspect the dump truck driver might have suffered a medical event.
One witness told the Seattle Times that none of the cars could move to the side or forward or backwards, so they just had to watch the dump truck plow through traffic and hope they didn’t get hit.
While there is no hard data on how often medical events lead to traffic accidents, it is a safety concern and there are legal precedents on the matter. With any accident cause is crucial, it’s something victims need to know so that they can identify the party or parties financially responsible for their injuries, but liability is a bit murky when it comes to accidents caused by medical events.
This accident brings up the subject of a driver’s liability when they cause a car accident because they suffered a medical event. Many traffic accidents have a clear-cut causes, such as speeding or intoxication, so liability is easy to establish. The same, however, cannot be said of auto accidents that occur when a driver suffers a medical event that causes them to lose control.
In some, not all, cases medical events are viewed as Acts of God and a motorist who causes an accident while experiencing one may be off the hook for the resulting property damage, injuries and deaths. But that doesn’t mean the victims can’t recover compensation.  In such cases, the victims will have to file their injury claim with their insurer.
