Police officers injured during car chase in Baton Rouge area
Baton Rouge, LA – It is fairly common for police officers to have to chase suspects who flee away from crime scenes. However, this can also create a serious danger to both the officers involved in the chase and the public as a whole. This is because police chases cause accidents and sometimes the injuries can be severe. However, the local government can potentially be sued for these actions if the officer acted recklessly or inappropriately based on the circumstances.
A police chase in the area of Metairie, Louisiana resulted in injuries to an officer with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and others [1].
Driver crashes into police car while attempting to flee
A statement from the department said that the officers involved in the chase were in pursuit of two suspects at approximately 3:30 am on a Wednesday morning. At some point during this chase, the suspects lost control of their vehicle and collided with a police vehicle. The sheriff’s office did not give details about what underlying crime caused the chase to begin or how the pursuit started.
Two ambulances responded to the area of the Interstate 10 service road westbound following the incident. The officers injured in the collision were brought to UMC for treatment. Pictures of the scene after the crash also showed the damaged vehicles being towed away, which included the police vehicle and the vehicle used by the suspect.
A total of three injuries were reported, with one officer who was hurt during the motor vehicle accident while two other police officers sustained minor injuries while attempting to take the suspect into custody.
The doctrine of sovereign immunity
The government was traditionally protected from civil lawsuits by individuals through laws that were referred to as sovereign immunity. This meant that the government was immune from most tort law cases that can be brought against other businesses, individuals and entities. However, in recent decades most of these laws have been abolished and replaced with statutes that outline the conditions for suing the government. Anyone who has been harmed by a police car or other government driver in Louisiana can retain an attorney and see if they are eligible for compensation for losses such as medical costs and lost wages.
