Prairieville pedestrian dies in hit and run crash near highway

Hit-and-Run Incident L

Prairieville, LA – Not all drivers who are involved in accidents obey the law. It is possible that the person can simply drive away to try to avoid the consequences such as increased insurance rates, or even criminal charges for their actions. However, drivers who are eventually caught will face additional charges for leaving the scene as well as paying for the costs of the damage that they caused through their insurance or a civil lawsuit. Those who have been involved in any kind of accident should review the situation with an attorney to see if legal action is necessary.

Local news for the Baton Rouge area reported on the death of a pedestrian who was walking near a highway on a Saturday morning [1].

Pedestrian is struck by hit and run driver

The incident began when a pedestrian was walking next to Highland Road in the area just north of Interstate 10.  A 47 year old male driving a pickup truck struck and injured the man. The truck left the scene, but returned later. The driver was arrested for driving without insurance and leaving the accident victim.

The victim was identified as a 58 year old male from Prairieville. He was transported from the accident scene, but died later at a hospital from his injuries. Based on the initial observations from the state police, they do not believe that either the victim or the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.

Leaving the scene of an accident

In the state of Louisiana, those who leave an accident scene without making contact or reporting the incident can face criminal penalties. This charge includes fines and a driver’s license suspension. Drivers should be sure to follow the law by exchanging information with the others involved, and then contacting the police if there appears to be any injuries or property damage in excess of a few hundred dollars.

In terms of civil lawsuits, it can be difficult to get compensation from a hit and run accident until the driver is found. The person needs to be identified and named as the defendant in a civil case before any compensation can be paid out. However, there are special types of auto insurance that may provide coverage against uninsured or unidentified drivers.
