DeSoto, FL- Self-driving cars may be the wave of the future, but Americans are reluctant to trust them. A small number of recent accidents involving self-driving cars isn’t helping gain the public’s trust in autonomous vehicles. President Obama is trying hard to change that and get the American public to trust and embrace self-driving cars.
In an op-ed appearing in the Pittsburg Post-Gazette, President Obama wrote that self-driving cars have “the potential to save tens of thousands of lives,” since 94 percent of fatal traffic accidents are the result of driver error. He also and said self-driving cars could “transform” the lives Americans whose handicaps make it impossible for them to drive.
Three-quarters of Americans are “afraid” of self-driving cars.

To put some of the public’s unease to rest, President Obama also said the federal government plans on developing new rules auto manufacturers would have to follow and a 15-point safety checklist so Americans are confident they are safe in this new technology.
The president added that regulation could hamper technology, so he said the federal rules would be flexible to meet the changing needs of the industry. President Obama hopes simple safety measures will help motorists trust self-driving cars, but that is going to take some time, considering a recent AAA survey that found 75 percent of Americans are “afraid” of autonomous cars.
Despite how the public may feel about self-driving cars, the industry is moving forward, and in the not so distant future, the autopilot feature will be standard on new vehicles. Autonomous vehicles will not only change the auto industry; it will also change how accident claims are resolved. Issues of liability could become an issue for motorists or auto manufacturers as more self-driving vehicles hit the road.
