Cranston, RI- Nearly three weeks after a fatal wrong-way accident that killed a young mother and father, Rhode Island authorities have installed a new signs they hope will prevent similar car accidents from happening in the future.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation began installing special “Wrong Way” signs along nearly troublesome off-ramps throughout the state. The signs have flashing lights framing the sign which are motion-activated and go off when it detects car traveling in the wrong direction. The signs are also online capable and can warn other motorists and police of a wrong-way driver’s location.
According to Turn to Ten, Rhode Island is the third state in the U.S. to utilize the new flashing signs. The state DOT hopes these signs will help them eliminate wrong-way accidents throughout the state.
Other efforts to stop wrong-way accidents focus on intoxicated driving, which leads to 90 percent of these accidents Col. Steven O’Donnell, the Superintendent of Rhode Island State Police, told Turn to Ten.

On Sunday, April 5th, Tiffany Sical, 21, and Brayan Rodriguez-Solis, 23, were traveling along Route 6 in Providence around 1:30 a.m. when they were hit head on. They were both killed on impact.
Evidence at the scene of the accident indicate that Rodriquez-Solis, who was driving, made attempts to avoiding colliding with the wrong-way driver.
Police said the driver 24 year-old Joel Norman was intoxicated at the time of the crash and have charged him with two counts of driving under the influence resulting in death and other alcohol-related charges.
The couple, who have a 6-year-old daughter were planning in getting married this summer, but now their daughter will grow up without her parents, because some irresponsible person got behind the wheel of their car after drinking.
