Last month, a ride at the Ohio State malfunctioned, and the accident left one person dead. Despite the accident happening in Ohio, it will have far-reaching implications around the country as other state fairs and festivals get ready to open. The Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair in Statesboro is no different. In fact, the rides at the Georgia fair are serviced by the same company, Amusements of America (AOA) that services the rides at the Ohio State Fair. Because of the incident in Ohio, the Statesboro fair has a focus on safety for their event in October, according to WTOC.
The Kiwanis Club, which sponsors the event, is making sure that all safety regulations are “rigorously” followed as per the Safety Engineering Section of the Georgia Fire Marshall. The Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner says that AOA will be subject to thorough inspections as soon as they enter the state. The first event they service will be in Gwinnett County in September. This is required by law in Georgia. However, after that first inspection, they will be able to operate throughout the state.
If someone attending a fair has a complaint regarding a ride, they should speak with the operator as soon as possible. If there’s a problem at the operator is unable to rectify, then the organizers of the fair are responsible for making sure everything is safe. If the fairgoer has further concerns, they can certainly contact 800.656.2298 to reach the state office, who can send an officer to inspect and investigate the situation.
For its part, the Kiwanis club of Statesboro issued a statement indicating their commitment to safety. They state that they follow all safety protocols required by the Safety Engineering Section, and that they are monitoring the situation in Ohio to make sure their fair will stay as safe as possible.
In Ohio, a ride that had previously been inspected broke, and caused the one death along with several injuries. There are questions about where there was a breakdown in the inspection protocol. Was it an error of the inspectors, or was there a gap in the requirements that let the erosion of the metal beam go unnoticed? These questions need to be answered to make sure that all fair rides are safe. AOA travels throughout the country, so there are thousands of American citizens using their rides and attractions every year.
