Albuquerque, NM- There are plenty of behaviors that put motorists at risk of being in a car crash; drunken or distracted driving being the big two. Now, a new study gives convincing evidence that drowsy driving is a growing, but often overlooked safety issue.
A recent study, published in the journal Sleep, found that people, who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, are 2.5 times more likely cause a traffic accident than people who don’t have the condition, according to Medical Daily.
This is because the sleep deprivation that accompanies obstructive sleep apnea leads to “moderate” cognitive impairment which is exacerbated when the sufferer is engaged in a complicated task such as driving, Medical Daily reported. Sleep deprivation can cause a motorist to fall asleep behind the wheel, drift in their lane of travel or ignore traffic signals; all behaviors that could lead to a major traffic accident.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder in which throat muscles relax causing the sufferer’s breathing to repeatedly stop and start breathing while they sleep, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most people with sleep apnea are unaware they have condition, but they do notice the symptoms which include snoring and daytime drowsiness, despite having a full night of sleep.
In recent Australian study, researchers found a person stays awake for 24 hours is as impaired as a person with a blood alcohol concentration of .10. Despite that fact, many people don’t think twice about drowsy driving.
Even though motorists may not realize the dangers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does and is taking aim at reduced fatigued driving accidents.
In a speech Monday, NHTSA head Mark Rosekind announced the federal agency is launching an initiative to combat drowsy driving.
Rosekind said, “We’re going to develop strategies specifically targeting populations especially vulnerable to drowsy driving.” Those strategies Rosekind said can include “old standbys like rumble strips on the road,” and technologies “that detect when you’re getting sleepy behind the wheel,” the Detroit News reported. The agency will also test the efficacy of public awareness campaigns.
A traffic accident can be deadly or can leave victims with devastating injuries and mounting medical costs. And a drowsy driving accident is no different. If you have been injured by a drowsy driver, you need a top-notch New Mexico accident attorney on your side, working to recoup all the costs you incur because of a negligent motorist.
In a recent AAA study, the traffic safety group found that one in five fatal traffic accidents are caused by drowsy drivers. Even though we don’t see drowsy driving as odious as drunken driving or texting and driving, this behavior inflicts unnecessary pain and suffering on innocent motorists and the at-fault drivers must take responsibility for the harm they have caused.
If you have been injured or lost a loved one in any type of traffic accident in New Mexico, you are urged to speak with an accident attorney to ascertain if you are eligible for compensation from the at-fault driver.
